Midleton Distillery to Pause Whiskey Production Until Summer 2025

Irish Distillers, the whiskey-making arm of spirits giant Pernod Ricard, has announced a temporary halt in production at its iconic Midleton Distillery starting in April 2025. Nestled in County Cork, Ireland, this historic site—celebrating its 200th anniversary this year—produces some of the world’s most celebrated Irish whiskey brands, including Jameson, Redbreast, Powers, and Midleton Very Rare. The pause, set to last until summer 2025, comes as the company adjusts its production schedule to ensure the long-term sustainability of its globally adored portfolio.

The decision arrives during a milestone year for Midleton, which has planned a series of special releases and events to mark two centuries of distilling heritage. Irish Distillers emphasized that this is not a retreat but a strategic recalibration. “The distillery will temporarily pause production in early April and resume in the summer to support the sustainable global growth of our Irish whiskeys,” a spokesperson stated. The company remains steadfast in its commitment to Midleton, having informed staff, suppliers, and customers to facilitate planning during this period.

Midleton’s sprawling facility has been a cornerstone of Irish whiskey since 1825, evolving from a wool mill into a powerhouse that merged with John Power & Son and John Jameson & Son in 1966 to form Irish Distillers. A major expansion in 1975 solidified its role as a producer of premium brands like the Spot Whiskeys and Knappogue Castle. The pause follows a broader industry trend, with distilleries like Bushmills also scaling back amid shifting market dynamics.

CEO Nodjame Fouad highlighted the anniversary’s significance: “In our 200th year, we honor our past while ensuring a thriving future for Midleton’s craft and community.” Among the year’s highlights is the final release of the Midleton Very Rare Silent Distillery Collection—a 50-year-old expression symbolizing the distillery’s legacy.

While the halt may raise eyebrows among whiskey enthusiasts, Irish Distillers assures fans that this is a routine adjustment enabled by enhanced operational efficiency. As Midleton prepares to toast its bicentennial, this pause underscores a balance between tradition and adaptability in a competitive global market.
